Smelters produce their own waste stream. Besides the exhaust that goes up the stack, large volumes of non-copper solids (slag) are left over. Above is a smelter slag pile at the Old Dominion mine in Globe. This mine is being reclaimed; although the headframe is still visible, the smelter has been demolished.
