The
parking garage has become the dominant form of urban architecture. scaled to
the automobile and the economics of speed, the parking garage is an engineered
solution to he desire for the convenience of the suburban strip mall. The banal
concrete buildings form a hollow density of semi-occupation. a pit stop for
a migrating populous.
the garage is a gateway to the city. for the body
entering the city it is the first physically occupied space outside the automobile.
but it is a hidden gateway, discretely placed out of the dominant view. the
parking garage occupies the misplaced space in between the city and the suburb.
as a building type the rigid form and ingenious integration with the functions
of the car, have made it one of the most modern and innovative building types
