COPIA: [plenty, fruitful]; an inexhaustible
supply: abundance
I have always been interested in the minute details that make up the routines
and rituals of modern life, finding magical moments in the mundane––from
trash collection to transportation. After September 11, I turned my lens on
the most commonplace of American activities –– shopping. I became
fascinated by the way in which consumer culture became equated with patriotism,
as American citizens were called upon to shop as a way to boost the country's
flagging economy. The images presented here explore the political and global
implications of consumption. By scrutinizing these rituals through photography,
I hope viewers will re-evaluate the increasing complexities of our contemporary
world. As world events grow beyond our control, is this how we will cope?
