Located at San Gorgonio Pass just north of Palm Springs
California, is one of the three largest wind farms in the world, with over
4000 wind turbines in a 70 square mile area. Wind farms are clusters of wind
turbines that generate electricity, they are located in areas with reliably
favorable wind speeds (averaging +10mph). The turbines at San Gorgonio pass
are privately owned and operated by over 20 different companies, with the
electricity output being sold mainly to Southern California Edison under long
term contracts.
San Gorgonio pass is an ideal location for farming wind energy, beacause as hot air rises over the Coachella Valley it forces cooler air through to pass between the San Bernadino and San Jacinto Mountains creating averarage wind speeds of 15-20 miles per hour. The prime wind season occurs here from March to September, coinciding with the peak summer energy demands.
