Chacarita, Buenos Aires, Argentina
Like a walled city, the public cemetery of Chacarita sprawls over 96 hectares
in the middle of Buenos Aires, taking in around 70 corpses a day. With 100
thousand aboveground mausoleums and graves, and 220,000 'nichos' in a vast
maze of corridors descending 3 stories below the surface, it stands as one
of South America's largest cemeteries. Chacarita gets a constant stream
of regular visitors, people who have been coming for five, ten, fifteen
years, every week or every month, to bring flowers to their dead. During
Christmas, the Day of the
Dead, Dia del Amigo and other holidays, the cemetery becomes one of the
city's busiest public spaces.
