This survey documents the collective art work found on the city streets of berlin. It is a collection of markings left by graffiti artistis, commercial advertisers, ,event organizers, and bored teenagers, who use the walls of the city for self expression, communication, and political resistence. The overlapping layers formed by the different and somtime contradictory interests and authors forms a dense collage of multiple and random meanings. When viewed outside of its context the abstract collages rival the strength of the more controlled art of the museums, but without carrying the weight of a single author or the artificial valuation caused by art collectors and museum patronage. These graphics can be seen as a representation of a collective consciuous of a neighborhood and a city, including all of its inconsistencies and contradictions.
