Debris removal. The bulldozers clear the rubble from the blast to expose the coal seam. Coal forms in horizontal strata that are called "seams." In this part of the country, the seams are close to the surface which makes strip mining the most efficent an econmical way to remove the coal. You can see the distinct line of a coal seam running horizontally just above the exhaust stacks of the bulldozer.
